6/21/2010 Update – this was written when I didn’t have much of a clue about what bookmarking was really used for. Of course, if you make money from home through Internet marketing, you know that the social bookmark sites are used for getting anchored backlinks to your websites.
You might have started hearing a lot about social bookmarks and seen something similar to the little icon just below this article (the one that says “bookmark” in it). These little icons are all over the place now – on the sides of pages and below posts. What is that icon for and what can it do for you?
We all have a “favorites” icon on our toolbar that we can use to save websites that we would like to remember and return to in the future. Those “favorites” are only saved on our individual computer however, and if we were at the library or a friends house on their computer our list of favorites would not be accessible.
That’s where social bookmarking comes in. Click on that bookmark icon and a window will pop up that has the 15 – 20 of the most popular bookmarking sites. You have to sign up to each of those sites individually and most people belong to only one or two of them. Now, instead of saving your favorite places to your own computer, you can have them all saved right on the web. You would then be able to access your favorites from any computer at any time!
But wait, there’s more. For internet marketers and anyone who has a web page, these social bookmarking sites can be used to gain links and some traffic. You see, once you bookmark your favorite places on one of those bookmarking sites, anyone who is a member of that site can see your bookmark and click on the link. The more popular links usually rise to the top and thus gain more viewers as they are exposed to more eyeballs.
It is advantageous for website owners to get links to their sites so that more viewers will have an opportunity to discover their website. In addition, these social bookmarking sites typically have a high page ranking so that search engines will begin to place a higher value on their website. In other words, if I have 10 incomming links to DayJobNuker.Com, it is better if those links come from established high page ranking sites than if they come from 10 of my freind’s sites that were all slapped up last month.
As with everything on the internet, it is easy to get confused and intimidated by all the terms thrown around. It is best that you try to learn one thing at a time and thus not get too overwhelmed. Now you know a little about what social bookmarking is…off you go to learn about the next buzzword!
